In addition to its equestrian history, Alter  do Chão is known for its Roman ruins, which can be seen in the public baths, called Ferragial d'El Rei, and a bridge at Vila Formosa.  The castle here was built in 1359 by King Dom Pedro I in 1359.  Each session of the Congress will be presented in English, French, German, Portuguese and Spanish. Events in July 2008

During the last Sunday in July in Switzerland
The Shepherd Festival on Gemmi
- At 11:30 am, on the last Sunday in the July, the quiet landscape around Lake Dauben is suddenly filled with life.  About 1000 sheep converge at the lakeside.  The annual shepherd festival starts when the shepherds and people from Bern and the Valais meet for a casual one-day together.  The farmers arrive throughout the morning with their sheep and keep them back until the "Glack" - a mixture of bran and salt - is scattered.  It is a special delicacy for the sheep.  The animals rush down the steep slopes in a frenzy.  The shepherd festival is also an opportunity for shepherds and farmers to meet in a friendly atmosphere.  Although they live only a few kilometers apart, they are also separated by high mountains and inaccessible terrain.  Keeping the friendship alive between the neighbors from the Valais and the Bernese Oberland beyond the Gemmi pass is the ultimate goal of this meeting.  That is the way it has been since 1957, original, friendly, spectacular and still a new experience every time.  Valais,  Switzerland

The park, including the palaces and pavilions, will be illuminated in such a way as to be reminiscent of the Baroque festivities of the past.
