Advent in Salzburg
Advent in Salzburg is a holiday journey through one
of the loveliest cities in the world. The narrow streets and spacious
squares in the Old City beckon visitors to explore the romantic town.
Historic restaurants and coffeehouses invite passers-by to come in and
warm up while the city's attractions are cloaked in a frosty winter
white. A journey that suddenly gives you the same comforting feeling
you get whenever you hear the magic of "Silent Night".
The pace in the city has slowed down and its
former tranquility returns after the hustle and bustle of the summer have
faded. But the city is not asleep! Pre-Christmas music can be heard
during the Serenades in the Gothic Hall,
in the historic hall at Hohensalzburg
Fortress or in the Romanesque Hall at
St. Peter's Monastery.
The following is a list of Christmas Markets,
concerts, exhibitions and other Advent programmes that will surely make a
holiday visit to Salzburg a truly unforgettable experience.

TRADITIONAL
CHRISTMAS MARKETS
It is the season for a romantic walk across
the city's hilltops, affording a breathtaking view of the city's
snow-covered roofs, domes and towers. The pealing of countless church
bells reminds us that Christmas is near. After descending back down to
the city, the merry bustling on the Salzburg Christmas Market fills us
with a cozy, warm feeling and wakes fond childhood memories. The smell of
punch and toasted almonds, hot roasted chestnuts and freshly baked apples
envelopes our noses; the vendors' gingerbread hearts, Nativity figures,
Christmas tree ornaments, toys and warm pullovers are irresistible.

"FLIGHT INTO EGYPT"
Although only mentioned briefly in the Bible,
the "Flight into Egypt" is rich
in legend. According to Matthew, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream
saying, "Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt!". For
King Herod intended to kill all of the children in Bethlehem (Mathew
2,13).
The exhibition shows paintings and graphics
related to this flight, ranging from medieval woodcarvings and Dürer's
much-cited portrayal of the scene to a series of 24 etchings on the
topic by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo. The biblia pauperum at St. Peter's
Monastery shows the "Flight", the "Fall of the Idols“, the "Murder of the
Innocents" und the "Return from Egypt". Current photographs of refugee
camps bring the topicality of the theme to mind.

Singers
Performing at the Large Festival Hall
A
MESSAGE OF PEACE
Salzburg Advent Singing at the Large
Festival Hall in Salzburg
"Da hat vor dem Stall der Äpfibam
bliaht" is the last staged music performance by Tobias
Reiser, who managed Salzburg Advent Singing for many years. After
a brilliant premiere in 1999, the play was carefully revised for the new
production and is certain to magnetize the audience with a new stage
design and new approach.
Following an introduction to folk music and a prolog by the shepherds
"Heut is a b’sondere Nacht, was’s heut für a Liachtn hermacht!“
("Tis a special night, a night of wondrous light!”), the blind shepherd
Simeon's dream is interpreted as the wondrous story of Joseph and Mary of
Nazareth. The actors impressively portray the things Joseph and Mary
experience on their long and difficult journey – from the Archangel
Gabriel's annunciation and the encounter with the shepherds to the
exultation (Gloria). For years, familiar, traditional Alpine
songs and carols have blended in with new compositions to make Salzburg
Advent Singing a harmonious whole.
